Which Technology Would We Be Better Off Withoutı A Difficult Dilemma.

ı“Is true art more valuable on the condition that the creator remains anonymous, or does the name becoming a ‘brand’ inevitably increase the perceived value of the workı”

ıWe are all pleased with the speed, convenience, and limitless flow of information offered by the modern world. Our smartphones, navigation systems, uninterrupted communication networks… these are technologies that would leave huge gaps in our lives. Yet, in this age of speed and connection, is there truly a technology we would be better off withoutı Answering this question requires not so much rejecting a technology entirely, but making a sincere examination of how we use it and its effects on our minds.

ıFor me, at the heart of this dilemma lies, perhaps not surprisingly, social media platforms and the smartphones that carry them in our pockets.

ıThe Technology That Steals Silence: Constant Notifications

ıSmartphones are magical boxes that fit the world into the palm of our hands. However, this magical box has also become a factory that produces constant distraction. You pick up your phone to check an email, and two seconds later, you find yourself lost in a completely different social media feed. This situation has severely eroded our ability to focus.

ıBut the truly destructive impact comes from social media itself. Social media presents a polished, filtered version of real life, fueling a sense of inadequacy in all of us. As we watch others’ ‘perfect’ vacations, career successes, or happy moments, we are confronted with the “behind-the-scenes” messiness of our own lives. This comparison trap can increase anxiety and depressive tendencies.

ıSometimes I wonder: If only we had a time machine, could we return to the ‘offline’ calm of the 90s, where there was no constant obligation to compare oneself with others, and where we could simply focus on the task at handı

ıWhy Would We Be ‘Better Off’ Without Itı

ıIf these technologies didn’t exist, would we be people who are less connected but form more meaningful connectionsı

  1. ıStronger Focus: Without constant notifications and endless scrolling feeds, we could dedicate uninterrupted time to a book, a conversation, or simply our own thoughts.
  2. ıMore Realistic Perception of Life: If we weren’t forced to watch only the highlight reels of everyone else’s lives, we could better appreciate our own normal. We could see more clearly that failures, monotony, and daily struggle are also part of life.
  3. ıDeeper Relationships: A world where everyone in a cafe is talking to the person next to them, not their phone; a concert where the moment is lived through the eyes, not through camera lenses… While technology is expected to bring us closer, we realize it actually moves us further away from those closest to us physically.

ıOf course, using social media as a source of information and a tool for communicating with family and friends has countless benefits. However, these benefits are gradually overshadowed by the harm it inflicts on our mental health and attention spans. Perhaps the problem isn’t the technology itself, but our unconscious habit of using it.

ıBut still, if we are to honestly answer the question, “Which technology would we be better off withoutı”: My choice would be for these streaming technologies—which impose a constant obligation to perform and steal our silence—either not to exist at all or for their use to change radically.

ıSo, what do you sayı Which is the one technology you feel you would gain more by taking out of your lifeı
