The Egoist: The Stranger We See When Looking in the Mirror

Most of the time, when we hear the word “egoist,” we immediately think of someone who doesn’t think of others, cares only about themselves, and is selfish. That familiar face who is conceited and constantly says “me, me, me.” However, the truth is that the ego has a much more complex structure than it appears.

The ego actually means “I” in Latin. It is our self, the story we possess about who we are. Our beliefs about ourselves, our successes, and even our failures are a part of this story. A healthy ego protects us, gives us self-confidence, and helps us establish our boundaries. So when do we become “egoists”? When does this balance break?

A person becomes an egoist when the ego becomes the sole ruler of their life. At that point, they exaggerate the story about themselves so much that there is no room left for the stories of others. Another person’s success does not make them happy; on the contrary, it threatens them. They see criticism not as a lesson, but as an attack on their personality. They do everything to prove their own righteousness because, in their world, they do not have the luxury of being wrong.

But do you know what is the most tragic part? Beneath this arrogant and strong stance seen from the outside, a deep insecurity usually lies. An egoist is actually someone who cannot accept themselves as they are, battling feelings of inadequacy. No matter how much they pretend to love themselves, hidden beneath that mask is a fragile soul trying to fill its sense of worth with the approval and appreciation it receives from others.

Life constantly pushes us into a search for balance. Trusting oneself is wonderful, but this should not mean denying the presence and value of others. Let us not forget that the person we see when we look in the mirror is not only ourselves, but also a reflection of the bonds we build and the stories we share with other people.
