Part 1: A Shamanic Perspective in City Life: Connecting with the Unseen World

When we hear the word “shamanism,” most of us immediately think of wild nature, deep forests, rituals performed around a fire atop a mountain, or a tribal lifestyle completely detached from the modern world.

So, is a modern human who spends most of their life among concrete buildings, horns, screen lights, and subway crowds deprived of this shamanic wisdom? Is city life an excuse to cut our ties with our spiritual roots?

The answer is a definitive no. Because a shamanic perspective is not a matter of geography; it is a matter of perception and consciousness.

Animism: Remembering That Everything Is Alive

The cornerstone of shamanism is animism—the belief that everything in the universe (a stone, water, a tree, the wind, or even a building on the street) possesses a soul, an energy.

Modern city dwellers, however, are programmed to view everything as “lifeless objects”: asphalt is just a road, a building is a wall, a tree is merely decoration. This perspective cuts humans off from nature, dooming them to a spiritual loneliness. Living shamanically in the city begins with realizing that this world, thought to be lifeless, is actually alive and conversing with us.

* Saying good morning to the potted plant on your windowsill,

* Noticing and thanking the water you drink for the life it gives as it flows down your throat,

* Feeling the energy of the soil beneath your feet or a single ancient tree while walking in the park…

These are all the purest practices of urban shamanism.

Soil Beneath the Concrete

Living in the city does not mean cutting ties with nature; it means refusing to ignore nature’s stubborn resistance beneath the concrete. A wild weed growing out of a crack is the greatest proof of how alive that city truly is.

A shamanic perspective is not about searching for a forest outside; it is about preserving your own wild and pure nature even in the middle of a city crowd. You don’t need to go to the mountains to connect with the unseen world, because your soul breathes under the exact same sky everywhere.

How do you maintain your connection with nature and unseen energies amidst the hustle and bustle of city life?
