Northern Winter Dream: The Magical Touch of Sapporo
Hello dear friends,
If you are anything like me, you follow the call of your soul when making travel plans. Sometimes that call leads you into a snowy fairy tale in the sharp cold of the North. Today, I want to tell you about Sapporo, the heart of Japan’s Hokkaido island, and one of the first cities that comes to mind when you think of winter.
Yes, Sapporo. That famous city that hosts the magnificent Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) every year, where colossal snow sculptures are built, attracting millions of people from around the world.
A Winter Wonderland: Yuki Matsuri
Let’s admit it, the most spectacular reason to visit Sapporo is undoubtedly this festival, which takes place in February. Seeing those massive models of historical buildings, anime characters, and fantastic worlds—all made of snow and ice—that you see on television, live… This is a truly mesmerizing experience. The pristine white texture of Odori Park transforms into an art gallery when illuminated by night lights. It makes you realize that snow can be this artistic.
Just Snowı Never!
But to think of Sapporo only as a winter festival city would be a great injustice. The soul of this city is vibrant, even beneath the snow.
Mouth-Watering Delicacies: Hokkaido is one of the luckiest regions in Japan when it comes to food. The seafood you eat here (especially crab and sea urchin) is incredibly fresh, leaving a lasting taste. But what is Sapporo’s real signatureı Of course, the famous Miso Ramen, with its rich and creamy broth! The warmth you feel when holding that bowl of ramen with your hands on a freezing cold evening will be an unforgettable memory.
The Heart of Beer: One of Japan’s oldest and most popular beer brands, the Sapporo Beer Factory and its museum, is located here. Even the red brick building of the factory itself breathes history. As a beer lover, you can’t leave without sipping a cold Sapporo beer here.
A Panorama of Nature: If you want a bird’s-eye view of the city, Mt. Moiwa is perfect for you. When you reach the summit by ropeway, especially in the evening, the view of the city sparkling with lights will take your breath away.
The Personal Touch
For me, traveling is not just about seeing; it’s about feeling. The peaceful atmosphere of Sapporo in winter, the crunching sound of snow under your feet as you walk, sitting side-by-side with locals in a small ramen shop and slurping your soup… These are the sincere moments a city offers you. People love to read things written with sincerity, even with flaws, because this is life itself. And Sapporo, just like life, offers both the challenges brought by the snow and incredible beauty all at once.
If your itinerary includes winter, delicious food, and a bit of a fairy-tale atmosphere, I suggest putting this vibrant and warm city of the North, Sapporo, at the top of your list. You won’t regret it!
