Lunar Phases
Lunar Phases
0° – 45° / New Moon
Impulsive Action Ignorant of the Past. Eager for challenges and confrontation. Focused on self-expression and stepping into the forefront. These individuals cast their own light onto others to ensure they are noticed. Like a shining sun, people cannot help but see them. They do not pause to analyze what they are doing or why they are doing it. Rather than formulating actions through thought, they follow their impulses and act immediately. In the birth chart, wherever Leo or the Sun resides indicates where this act of projection is strongest. They are either oblivious to the past, or for them, the past simply does not exist.
45° – 90° / Crescent Moon
Struggle Against Established Models. A striving to break free from the past and seek the new. Yet, despite their efforts, the past remains somehow attached to them. Therefore, to truly liberate themselves from history, they must deeply understand and account for their emotions and past habits. These individuals exhibit emotionally driven behaviors that ultimately serve to sever ties with traditions or family. This is simultaneously a struggle to forge their own values. Even if they remain emotionally attached to their families, they are driven by an effort to change familial values. They do not continue their family’s business or philosophies. They possess their own unique value systems. They strive to develop their own systems of security and finance, attempting to desperately free themselves from the habitual (familial) system. Wherever the Moon or Cancer is located reveals how they accomplish this or where this restlessness—this effort to escape the past—is rooted.
90° – 135° / First Quarter
Survival, Action, and Courageous Forward Motion. The ability to act within crisis and cope with turmoil. Attracting active, stimulating, and noisy situations. Dynamic, energetic, rapidly advancing. The tendency of this lunar phase is to encounter crisis head-on. They are prepared to face crises in order to spread out and expand; they tend to develop and enlarge their worlds, learn the art of struggle, become more objective toward people outside their immediate circle, and learn to view the world from a broader perspective. This may also mean engaging with a wider philosophy of life. At this stage, these individuals can adapt new thoughts and new images into their current lives because they are not afraid of encountering crisis. They build their lives according to their own belief systems.
135° – 180° / Gibbous Moon
Analysis and Differentiation. In this phase, the individual feels a motivation toward self-analysis, a sense of doing something valuable in life by being fully aware of their own actions; they exhibit an attitude that prioritizes personal progress. They tend toward classification, categorization, realizing the worth of values, and learning how to contribute to them, assuming responsibilities and duties toward these ends. They work to find a higher value in the world outside themselves to become a part of it, and they endeavor to eliminate other things that do not contribute to this value system they are trying to join. Individuals in this phase have a need to know the “why” behind their actions and to find a reason before they can take action. The placement of Saturn and Capricorn in the chart shows where this value and responsibility will be focused. At the same time, societal success is possible in this phase.
180° – 135° / Full Moon
Fulfillment and Illumination. The ability to see and become aware of two different (opposite) poles. In this phase, instinct’s work is finished. There is a need not just to instinctually react, but to understand. Before acting, one must understand and think, taking into account another person or situation; one must see oneself while simultaneously seeing the other person. They need partnerships, a spouse, or an ideal relationship. However, because they seek perfection—the most ideal—in this world full of images, this desire is often impossible to fulfill. They must learn to express themselves to the other party within the relationship, or they must idealize a cause higher than themselves and learn to express themselves through it. In other words, when they can express themselves to their partners, it implies they may also learn to articulate a cause greater than themselves, realizing their existence has a reason that transcends their own ego. The objective structure of their actions is outlined and directed toward a purpose. They seek to perfect themselves through the union of instinct and intellect.
135° – 90° / Disseminating Moon
Spreading and Distribution. The distribution and transformation of knowledge. This phase represents a stage of giving. Love is a part of this stage. Giving something valuable. If it is desired for something to become popular, individuals in this phase can ensure it (e.g., writers, messengers). The manner in which this spreading and distribution occurs is clarified by the Moon’s sign and house position. The consequences are considered based on the houses of Taurus and Venus (simultaneously, the sign and house where Venus is located). It is mandatory for these people to distribute and share what they possess, and to have a reason for doing so. Otherwise, they feel lost.
90° – 45° / Last Quarter
Rebellion and Crisis in Consciousness. The repositioning of the self and reality. Freeing oneself toward true individuality. Liberation from the thoughts of other people. A cycle of crisis. The crisis of forming an individuality that stands outside society. A more mental and spiritual crisis. The mental awareness of destiny. Learning how different they are through their thoughts. Freeing themselves from the expectations of those around them. For these individuals, what others think does not matter much. They are unique to themselves. As individuals, they can stand outside society mentally and spiritually. They can learn to become aware of their own individuality. They attempt to discover where they stand apart intellectually from society and others. They undergo a process of change that goes beyond the versions of themselves that people around them want to see, and in the end, they break these chains.
45° – 0° / Balsamic Moon
Assumption of One’s Own Destiny. Development and growth. Developing a new level of consciousness. Sensing something greater than oneself. A kind of purification and cleansing process involving Mars and Pluto. Physical energy and passions. While Pluto represents the regenerated self, the house and sign of Mars show how this will manifest. These individuals always leave something behind that will live on after them. They may be known as quite complex individuals. Their lives always necessitate significant arrangement and adjustment. Life holds a different meaning for them than it does for most people. Balsamic individuals engage with things that have largely escaped the attention of the masses.
