Tarot Archetypes Series 6: Trap, Destruction, and Hope – The Devil, The Tower, and The Star
These three cards of the Major Arcana represent the ultimate tests in the spiritual journey, challenging the ego and material dependencies. They demonstrate that true liberation comes both from within (breaking the chains of The Devil) and from without (the crumbling walls of The Tower).
I. Archetype: XV – The Devil
The Devil represents bonds, addiction to materiality, illusion, and the chains we place upon ourselves. The Devil does not hold you; you are the one holding onto your own chains.
-
Life Lesson: Dependency and Chains. The Devil is not an external evil controlling you, but the densest form of your fears, obsessions, and material desires. This card shows that to reclaim your power, you must confront your own shadow side. Your chains are not physical; they are mental.
-
Mystical Power: Severing Bonds. The ability to recognize your own addictions and obsessions (similar to the energy of Nessus) and free yourself from them through a conscious decision.
II. Archetype: XVI – The Tower
The Tower represents sudden destruction, crisis, revelation, and the inevitable shattering of unnecessary structures. Lightning strikes the top of the tower, destroying everything built on a false foundation.
-
Life Lesson: Upheaval and Release. The Tower signifies that structures in your life (relationships, careers, or beliefs) that have long held you back but have grown rotten must suddenly and dramatically collapse. While painful, this destruction is liberating. Without this clearing, you cannot build anew.
-
Mystical Power: Karmic Release. The ability to see that even in moments of great crisis, the destruction serves a higher purpose and brings an instantaneous release of stagnant energy.
III. Archetype: XVII – The Star
The Star represents tranquility, hope, inspiration, and spiritual guidance. Emerging after the collapse of The Tower, this card is the Universe’s gift to the soul that has been left naked and vulnerable.
-
Life Lesson: Faith and Healing. The Star shows that after the crisis, everything will pass and there is always a beacon of hope. It teaches you to heal yourself by pouring love over your body, soul, and energy (reminiscent of Hygeia’s lessons in self-care).
-
Mystical Power: Universal Connection. The ability to reconnect with cosmic energy and trust in higher guidance. This is manifestation energy in its purest form.
These three cards represent the intense yet hopeful transition from darkness into light.
In our final article of the series, shall we reach the peak of our journey with the ultimate stages of completion and enlightenment: The Moon (XVIII), The Sun (XIX), Judgement (XX), and The World (XXI)?
